You can use this method indoors on basement or garage floors as long as you follow the same preparation and sealing steps and control ventilation.
For indoor concrete cracks start by cleaning the area thoroughly with a stiff broom and a shop vacuum to remove dust, loose particles and any oils. Use a concrete degreaser on oil spots and rinse with clean water, then allow the slab to dry for at least twenty four hours or until the surface is completely moisture free. For hairline to quarter inch cracks force a polymer modified cementitious crack filler into the joint using a putty knife and compact it firmly so it bonds with the sides of the crack; for wider cracks or where movement is expected route the crack to a uniform width and depth and install a backing rod before applying an elastomeric urethane or polyurethane sealant. When working with solvent based sealants provide continuous ventilation by opening doors and windows and use a respirator with organic vapor cartridges if ventilation is limited. Always follow manufacturer cure times before allowing foot or vehicle traffic which can range from four hours to several days depending on product and temperature; keeping temperatures above fifty degrees Fahrenheit and humidity moderate speeds curing. Finish by applying a breathable concrete sealer if the space is prone to moisture, and wait the full recommended cure period before placing heavy items to ensure long term adhesion.
Common mistakes are applying sealant over contaminants which prevents bonding so always clean and degrease first and verify dryness with a moisture meter or simple plastic sheet test. Another issue is using the wrong type of sealant for expected joint movement which causes splitting or detachment so choose a flexible polyurethane for moving cracks and a cementitious patch for static hairline cracks. Third, inadequate ventilation with solvent based products can create strong fumes and slow curing so use water based alternatives indoors when possible or ensure cross ventilation and personal protective equipment when solvent based materials are required.
