When painting textured baseboards above carpet take steps that protect the carpet and preserve the texture while achieving a clean paint line.

Start by clearing dust and oils from the baseboard with a mild detergent solution and a soft brush then let it dry completely to ensure adhesion. Use painter ready products that are compatible with textured surfaces and choose a quality acrylic latex paint for flexibility and quick drying. For protection place a low profile painter shield or a thin, stiff cardboard between the carpet and baseboard and secure it with tape to prevent paint bleed; this is especially useful when the texture is raised. Apply a high tack edge painter tape such as Frog Tape along the top edge of the baseboard pressing firmly into the texture with a firm putty knife to get paint into the recesses of the tape and reduce seepage. When applying paint use a small dense foam roller to cover the textured profile evenly and then cut in with a high quality angled brush, feathering strokes away from the tape so excess paint does not pool at the texture peaks. If the texture is excessively rough or has loose particles sand lightly with a fine grit hand sanding block, vacuum thoroughly, and wipe with a tack cloth before priming and painting.

Common problems include paint bleeding under the tape caused by gaps between tape and texture, which you can reduce by pressing tape into the texture and sealing the tape edge with a thin layer of clear acrylic primer or the base color first. Another issue is uneven coverage on peaks and valleys of the texture, so roll with a dense foam roller using multiple light passes rather than one heavy coat and back-brush with a brush to work paint into crevices. Finally scuffed carpet fibers from tools can be a concern; prevent this by using a thin shield between carpet and baseboard and avoid brushing against the carpet while cutting in.
