Steel reinforcement bars transform a standard door into a resistant barrier that significantly raises the force required to kick it in.

When properly installed, a steel reinforcement bar distributes impact forces across a wider area of the door and into the surrounding frame so a single concentrated strike no longer overwhelms the lock zone. Use full width bars that run between reinforced jamb plates and tie into the framing with long structural screws of at least three inches to reach solid studs; those screws must enter wood or masonry, not just the door jamb, to transfer load. For installation, mark the centerline of the lock area, align the bar so it sits directly behind the lockset and deadbolt, and predrill pilot holes to avoid splitting the door or jamb. Combine the bar with an upgraded strike plate that is at least one quarter inch thick and anchored with the same long screws to ensure the force path is continuous from the hardware into the framing. If you are using a bar-style reinforcement lock that engages multiple points, check clearances and adjust strike pockets so the bar engages fully when latched or deadbolted. For metal doors or hollow core doors, consider through-bolting the bar assembly with backing plates on the interior face to prevent pull through and to provide a stiff load path.

Common problems include installing screws that are too short which leaves the bar anchored only to the jamb and allows the frame to split; fix this by replacing screws with ones long enough to reach structural framing. Another issue is misaligned hardware where the bar does not seat against the strike plate causing hinge or lock shear; correct that by loosening fasteners, realigning the bar so it fully engages the strike, and retightening with even torque. A third concern is relying on the bar alone when the door edge and hinges are weak; address this by reinforcing hinges with longer screws and using a continuous hinge or hinge-side reinforcing plate to create balanced resistance on both lock and hinge sides.
