Store this mixture in a clean, airtight glass jar away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets; glass is preferred because plastic can leach and affect the bait. Refrigeration will extend shelf life beyond a few days, and you should label the jar with the preparation date, ingredients and a safety warning. Avoid contaminating the bait with oils, detergents, or other pest control chemicals because those reduce palatability and kill ants on contact before they carry it back to the nest. For the strongest results mix fresh every three to five days when not refrigerated; if refrigerated, use within two weeks and return any unused bait to the refrigerator promptly after use.

Three common mistakes are making the bait too strong so ants die before sharing it, using ingredients that repel ants like essential oils, and storing it improperly so it ferments or becomes contaminated. If the bait is too concentrated reduce the Borax amount and increase the sugar or syrup so workers can feed and transport it; test with a small drop to see if ants carry it away. If you have been using scented cleaners or repellents near bait stations switch to unscented cleaners and place baits a few feet from recent cleaning locations. If your stored mixture smells sour, looks cloudy or shows mold discard it and make a fresh batch; never attempt to salvage by boiling or adding preservatives.
