Late Winter Ant Granules Timing Guide for Lawns

Apply ant-killing lawn granules when ants are most active but before colonies expand in warm weather.

Start treatment in late winter to early spring when soil temperatures consistently reach about fifty to fifty-five degrees Fahrenheit and ants begin foraging again. Spread granules evenly using a calibrated spreader at the manufacturer recommended rate and water them in with a light irrigation or rainfall within twenty-four hours to activate the pyrethroid. Monitor activity weekly by checking known trails and mound edges and reapply in early summer if foraging persists or after heavy rain has reduced residual activity. For southern climates plan a third application in fall as colonies rebuild before colder months and adjust timing locally based on persistent warmth or multiple brood cycles. Rotate products with different active ingredients in subsequent seasons to slow resistance development and always follow label directions for maximum legal and effective use. Store unused granules in a cool dry place away from children and pets and dispose of containers per label instructions.

Three common problems are applying too early when ants are dormant which wastes product and gives little control, so wait until consistent warm soil temperatures and visible activity. Another issue is uneven coverage or skipping water activation which leaves untreated gaps, so calibrate your spreader and water after application to move granules into the thatch and near ant pathways. The third concern is resistance from repeated use of the same chemistry, which you can reduce by alternating products with different modes of action and integrating nonchemical approaches such as targeted mound treatments and habitat modification like removing food sources.
