Leveling Stem Tightness Guide For Large Format Tiles

Use a tile leveling system at every joint when installing large format floor tiles to prevent lippage and get a flat, professional surface.

Start by selecting a system compatible with your tile thickness and substrate and read the manufacturer instructions for clamp torque and installation sequence before you mix any mortar. Mix a medium bed mortar to the consistency recommended for large format tiles and use a notched trowel sized to the tile and backing to ensure full coverage under the tile; back butter where necessary to avoid voids. Set each tile into the mortar with firm, even pressure and slide the leveling spacer stem between tiles at the prescribed interval, generally every six to eight inches along edges for very large pieces, and always at corners where four tiles meet. Once spacers are set, use the system’s pliers or a manual wedge to tighten until the tile faces are flush but not so tight that grout joints close or the tile rocked. Allow the mortar to reach initial set, typically twenty four hours in normal conditions, before removing stems by snapping or cutting flush as directed by the product instructions. Keep work in manageable sections to avoid the mortar skinning over before you complete spacing and tightening so you can adjust before setting.

Common mistakes are over tightening the clips which can crack thin tiles or cause tiles to bow; tighten until faces are flush and test on a spare tile to learn the right feel. Another issue is insufficient mortar coverage leading to hollow spots and subsequent breakage; check coverage with a straightedge and back butter large tiles when you see less than ninety five percent contact. Working too fast or leaving spacers in too long can trap moisture or complicate stem removal; work in zones you can finish within the mortar open time and remove stems at the manufacturer recommended time, usually after initial set.
