The three most common mistakes are using generic household silicone because it sticks initially yet causes long term asphalt breakdown, sealing over wet or dirty shingles which traps moisture and hides existing rot, and applying excessive bead size that prevents proper shingle overlap and drying; stop using household silicone and switch to an asphalt compatible roofing sealant, always clean and dry the area and inspect for underlying damage before sealing, and apply only thin continuous beads following manufacturer bead size and location instructions so shingles can shed water and breathe.
