The most common mistake is tearing the surrounding shingles when prying, which you avoid by lifting gently and supporting the shingle tabs with your hand while you work. Another issue is underdriving or overdriving nails which causes loose shingles or damaged heads, so use a hammer to set nails flush with but not countersunk into the shingle surface. A third concern is poor alignment that leaves gaps for water to enter, so always check overlap lines and adjust the replacement shingle until it sits flush with neighbors before finishing the nailing and sealing.
