Use a clean, dry application surface and apply a thin, even dust layer under appliances, inside cabinet corners, and along baseboards where roaches travel; avoid piles or thick clumps since insects avoid deep piles and moisture will render the dust ineffective. For bait mixes, blend boric acid into a bait matrix such as crushed bread crumbs, sugar, or a small amount of syrup so the roach eats the bait and carries toxic dust back to harborage sites; keep the bait fresh and replace it if it becomes wet or moldy. Place bait stations or bowls inside tamper resistant containers or under locked lids to reduce non target exposure and keep pets and children away from loose dust. Use gloves and a dust mask when applying loose boric acid and wash hands after handling to minimize skin contact and inhalation. Monitor activity with sticky traps or by visual checks and reapply thin dust after cleaning or if the dust is removed by foot traffic, following the product label interval for reapplication. Remember that boric acid works slowly so expect control over several weeks as foraging roaches carry the powder back to nests.

One common mistake is applying too much dust which creates clumps that roaches avoid, so always apply a barely visible, thin film and brush out any ridges. Another issue is placing boric acid where it will get wet from sinks or leaky pipes which neutralizes the powder, so move bait and dust to dry locations or fix leaks before treatment. People also leave loose dust accessible to pets and children, so use bait stations or sealed containers and keep treated areas off limits until dust is no longer easily disturbed.
