When retreating slab edges post construction, start by performing a thorough inspection along the entire slab perimeter looking for gaps, voids, soft concrete, mud tubes and signs of moisture intrusion. For exterior porches and slabs where the soil is inaccessible lift edge capstones or remove small sections of paving and apply termiticide under the slab or within voids, then replace coverings and restore compacted soil to maintain drainage away from the foundation. Always follow label directions for application rates, personal protective equipment and reentry intervals and document treatments with sketches, dates, product names and concentrations for future inspections.
Common problems include missing voids behind grade beams where mud tubes remain hidden, so probe with a screwdriver and perform targeted injections or small openings to expose and treat those channels. Another frequent issue is improper liquid distribution when trench depth is too shallow or product is applied in a single spot, so maintain consistent trench depth and move along the perimeter applying measured volumes per linear foot. A third concern is recontamination from poor drainage causing soil movement and gaps at the slab edge, so correct grading, repair gutters and downspouts and backfill with compacted granular material after treatment to keep soil stable.
