Composite Primer Sanding Gap-Movement Topcoat Guide

Painting wood trim and composite trim requires different prep and product choices because their substrates accept paint very differently.

For exterior wood trim start by inspecting for rot, loose paint and nail pull. Remove any deteriorated wood and fill gaps with an exterior grade wood filler, then sand smooth to feather existing paint edges. Prime bare wood with a high quality exterior primer and apply two coats of a durable exterior topcoat, brushing with the grain and keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks. For composite trim begin by washing with a mild detergent or trisodium phosphate substitute, then sand lightly with fine grit to remove surface gloss and improve adhesion. Use an oil based or acrylic based primer formulated for composite materials and follow with flexible acrylic topcoats designed to accommodate thermal movement in the board. Allow full cure time between coats and avoid painting in direct sun or when temperatures are below recommended ranges to prevent adhesion and drying problems.

Common mistakes are skipping proper surface preparation, which causes poor adhesion and peeling; fix this by thoroughly cleaning, sanding and priming the substrate before topcoats. Another frequent error is using rigid coatings on composite trim that expands and contracts, leading to cracking; choose flexible acrylic topcoats and primers made for composite materials to reduce stress. A third issue is neglecting joints and fastener penetrations, which lets water enter and rot wood or separate composite seams; inspect joints, re-caulk with a paintable exterior sealant as needed and monitor for seasonal movement.
