Adjusting a toilet flapper chain so the flush completes reliably without running is a small task that saves water and prevents tank overflows.
Start by turning off the water supply and flush once to drain most of the tank so you can work with a lower water level. Measure the chain so that there is a slight slack when the flapper is fully seated, roughly a quarter inch to one half inch, and avoid tightness that can keep the flapper ajar. If the supplied chain is too long, trim it using pliers and a diagonal cutter while leaving at least two links to allow for future adjustment. Use the spare clips or rings on many flapper assemblies to fine tune the effective length by moving the clip along the chain until you get the correct slack. If your chain is too short or shows corrosion, replace it with a replacement chain of similar gauge and corrosion resistant finish, threading it through the flapper eye and securing it to the flush lever hook so that the flapper lifts fully but closes quickly. Finally, turn the water back on, let the tank refill, and perform repeated test flushes while observing the flapper to confirm a crisp lift and clean reseat, adjusting incrementally until the flush stops reliably without the fill valve running.
Common issues include a chain that is too tight causing continuous running, which you fix by lengthening the chain slightly and adding a small amount of slack so the flapper seats fully. Another frequent problem is a chain that is too long and becomes trapped under the flapper or gets tangled, and the remedy is to trim the chain and secure excess links with an extra clip or by looping the chain under the flapper so it cannot slip under. A third concern is a degraded or rusty chain that breaks or causes inconsistent lifts, and the simple solution is to purchase and install a corrosion resistant replacement chain and inspect the valve and flapper for wear at the same time.
