Exposure to heat raises internal pressure in aerosol spray cans and can change recharge performance and safety both before and after recharging.
When a can is exposed to heat the propellant expands and increases internal pressure which can push the valve to leak or rupture the can if the pressure exceeds the container design. Heat also accelerates vaporization of low boiling point propellants so the ratio of liquid to gas shifts, which reduces spray performance and can cause sputtering or an altered spray pattern. Before recharging, warm cans are more likely to vent during attachment of recharge fittings so always let the can cool to stable room temperature for at least one hour and work in a well ventilated area. When recharging, transfer at ambient conditions and add small incremental amounts of propellant while monitoring pressure using a calibrated gauge that attaches to the can fitting, stopping if pressure rises rapidly. After recharge, thermal exposure can produce overpressure as the new charge equilibrates so store cans in a cool area away from direct sunlight and heat sources for at least twenty four hours before heavy use. If you must use the can in warmer conditions, partially depressurize by briefly actuating the valve until the spray is steady and consistent while wearing eye and skin protection.
Common mistakes include recharging cans that are still warm which risks sudden venting or failure, so always allow them to cool and verify temperature with touch or a handheld infrared thermometer and only proceed at room temperature. Another frequent issue is overcharging because people guess the amount of propellant instead of measuring it, so attach a pressure gauge and add charge in small amounts checking pressure after each increment to stay within manufacturer specified pressure ranges. People also store freshly recharged cans in hot vehicles or near heaters which can cause delayed rupture, so place cans in shaded, ventilated storage at or below room temperature and move them slowly to cooler conditions before use.
