Bent Hinge Pin Inspection Guide With Flush Leaf Check

Bent or damaged door hinges usually show clear signs you can spot without removing the door.

Start by opening and closing the door slowly while watching the hinge pins and leaves for wobble or binding. Place a finger on the hinge barrel as someone else moves the door to feel for excessive play that indicates a worn pin or loose knuckle. Look for visible deformation such as bent leaves that no longer sit flush against the jamb or door surface, and check for cracks or split metal near the screw holes where stress concentrates. Measure alignment by closing the door and noting uneven gaps around the door; if hinge alignment adjustments do not correct a persistent low or high corner, the hinge itself is often the cause. Remove one hinge pin with a hammer and punch to inspect the pin and barrel for scoring or flattening, which means replacement is required. When replacing, match the hinge leaf and barrel dimensions and the screw hole spacing, choose a heavy duty grade for exterior or high use doors, and lubricate the pivot with a light machine oil after installation to reduce wear.

A common mistake is assuming loose screws are the only problem, which can hide a bent leaf that will continue to pull screws out; tighten screws, then replace the hinge if the leaf will not sit flush. People often try to bend a damaged hinge back into shape, which weakens the metal and leads to recurrent failure; replace with a new hinge of the same thickness and material instead. Another issue is swapping in the wrong size or cheap light duty hinge, causing premature sag or misalignment; always transfer the old hinge to the new one on a template to match screw placement and use a heavier duty hinge for heavier doors.
