Borax-based homemade ant bait can be effective but requires careful placement because it poses risks if accessed by pets, children, or wildlife.

Borax is sodium borate, a low acute toxicity compound for adults at the usual concentrations used in baits, but that does not mean it is harmless. For bait mixes use a concentration around one to three percent borax by weight so ants will ingest the slow-acting bait and carry it back to the colony; higher concentrations kill foragers too quickly and reduce colony uptake. Choose a sweet or protein attractant based on the target species; sugar water or honey works for sugar-feeding ants while a mixture with peanut butter or canned tuna attracts protein-feeding species. Place baits in shallow containers with small openings or on cardboard squares to limit access and check them twice daily so you can remove them once activity declines. Always keep baits out of reach of children and animals by setting them inside closed containers with entry holes sized for ants only or under elevated furniture where small pets cannot reach. Wear disposable gloves when preparing and placing bait, wash hands after handling, and store borax in a labeled, child resistant container away from food and living areas.

Common mistakes include using too much borax which kills worker ants too fast and prevents transfer to the nest, so reduce concentration and retest; placing bait where pets or children can reach it, so relocate baits to secured containers or inside cabinets that ants access from gaps and observe closely; and assuming wildlife are safe because borax is low toxicity, so avoid placing baits on the ground where butterflies, lizards, birds, or small mammals can investigate and instead elevate or cover them. For each issue monitor results and adjust bait formula, location, and protection until ant activity stops while keeping non-target exposure minimal.
