Homemade Borax ant bait can work outdoors in humid or rainy weather if you protect the bait from direct moisture.

Borax interferes with ant digestion and can be mixed with sugar or syrup to attract foraging workers, but moisture dilutes both attractant and active ingredient so you need to adapt your method. Use a thick syrup base such as one part corn syrup to two parts sugar to slow dilution and help borax remain palatable; stir until fully dissolved and cool before adding borax so it mixes evenly. Place bait in shallow, covered containers like plastic lids or small waterproof bait stations with a tiny entrance that keeps rain out while allowing ants to enter. Position stations under eaves, inside dry crevices, or beneath flat stones so they are shielded from direct rainfall but still accessible to trail-following ants. Check stations after heavy rain and reapply fresh bait if it has been diluted or washed away; for continuous control replace bait every seven to ten days in warm, humid climates. When working near gardens or play areas label stations clearly and place them where pets and children cannot reach them.

Three common issues are bait dilution, nonattending ants, and bait theft by other animals. If bait gets diluted after a storm, remove it, dry the station, and replace with a thicker syrup mixture to restore potency. If you see only dead ants near the bait but no colony collapse, the formulation may be too toxic too fast; reduce borax concentration and increase sugar ratio so workers carry it back before dying. If larger insects or wildlife are consuming the bait, switch to enclosed bait stations with small entry holes or place stations higher off the ground where target ant sizes can access them.
