Liquid ant baits rely on slow-acting toxicants combined with attractive sugars so worker ants carry the bait back to the nest where it is shared with the colony. Choose products labeled for indoor use and read the active ingredient and mode of action before purchase; common active ingredients include hydramethylnon and boric acid, which differ in how they are metabolized by insects and how hazardous they are to vertebrates. Place bait stations along known ant trails and against baseboards rather than in open floor areas to minimize accidental contact, and snugly close station lids so curious hands and paws cannot access the liquid inside. Replace baits on the manufacturer recommended schedule because old or contaminated bait can become less attractive and lead to surface feeding that increases exposure risk. If you have children under five years old or pets that lick floors or chew objects, prefer baits formulated with lower mammalian toxicity such as boric acid liquids, and combine baiting with nonchemical measures like caulking entry points and removing food residues.
