A two-ingredient natural ant killer can control small to moderate infestations but will struggle with very large or multiple deep nests.

Use a boric acid and sugar solution at a ratio of one part boric acid to three parts granulated sugar mixed into a syrupy consistency, then place it where ants travel but out of reach of children and pets. For sizable nests set multiple bait stations along trails, near entry points, and close to suspected nest locations so worker ants find and carry the bait back to the colony. Replace bait every three to five days or sooner if it dries out, because ants will stop harvesting desiccated bait and the colony will not be affected. Keep competing food sources off counters and floors by cleaning spills and storing food in sealed containers so ants prefer the bait. If you know the nest location, place bait within a few feet of the nest entrance to increase transfer to the queen and brood, and avoid spraying insecticide on foraging ants since that interrupts bait flow. For heavy infestations consider alternating bait placements around the perimeter of the structure to intercept multiple trails and sustain intake over several weeks.

Common mistakes include using too much boric acid which makes the bait repellent; fix that by mixing precisely one part boric acid to three parts sugar and testing a small amount to confirm ants feed freely. Another issue is placing bait where it can be reached by children or pets; move stations to inaccessible crawl spaces, behind appliances, or inside sealed containers with small entry holes for ants only. A third problem is expecting fast results and abandoning the bait; natural bait works slower than contact sprays because it relies on transfer inside the colony so continue baiting for a minimum of two to four weeks and monitor activity before deciding if additional measures are needed.
