Capacitor Swap Trap Motor Amp Coil Clean Checklist

A failing capacitor can sometimes make the air conditioner start, run poorly, or not run at all, but replacing it is not always the true fix.

Most of the time the capacitor is just the symptom and not the root cause. Start by verifying the capacitor value and condition with a capacitance meter and a visual inspection for bulging or leaking. Next measure the motor amp draw while the unit is running and compare against the motor nameplate to detect an overcurrent condition that can stress capacitors. Check the blower wheel and both coil surfaces for dirt buildup because restricted airflow raises temperature and current, shortening capacitor life, and clean them using appropriate coil cleaner and a soft brush without bending fins. Inspect refrigerant charge indirectly by looking for frosting on lines, abnormal suction pressure, or long run times, since a low or high charge changes compressor load and can cause repeated capacitor failures. Finally, confirm that the start and run wiring, contactor condition, and starting device are correct and tight because poor electrical connections or a failing contactor can create voltage spikes that damage capacitors.

Common mistakes include replacing the capacitor without checking motor current, which leads to the new capacitor failing again; measure the motor amps and address motor bearings or worn windings if amps are high. Another frequent issue is ignoring dirty coils and blower wheel causing high head pressure and overheating; clean coils and restore airflow to prevent repeat failures. A third mistake is skipping a proper electrical inspection, so check contactor contacts, wiring insulation, and control voltages and repair or tighten any faults to protect the new capacitor.

BigHomeProjects.com connects homeowners with local contractors and offers project-focused discussions where we share experiences and troubleshooting tips relevant to capacitor and air conditioner issues. We help contractors find leads and participate in our community so everyone can learn best practices and avoid repeat failures.
