Using room walls as guides for laying large format floor tile often produces cascading alignment errors that become painfully obvious across the floor.

Large format tiles magnify small angular errors, so start by snapping reference grid lines from a measured center point rather than relying on wall edges. Measure and mark the true center of the room using the intersection of diagonals between opposite corners to locate an accurate central point for your grid. Use a chalk line to snap two orthogonal reference lines that are square to each other using the three four five method or a laser square to verify ninety degree accuracy. Dry lay a row of tiles along each reference line without adhesive to check for cumulative spacings and to decide whether to expand the grid outward or to shift the center slightly to balance border widths. When you are satisfied with the dry layout, transfer the grid to the substrate by scribing or snapping chalk lines, and apply adhesive only after rechecking with a straightedge that the first tile runs true to the grid. Keep tile spacings consistent with calibrated spacers, and continually check alignment as you move outward, adjusting the bed of adhesive or realigning tiles before it sets.

Common mistakes include trusting that walls are square which leads to racked or skewed joints and unacceptable grout line variation, so always measure and grid from the room center and correct layout before committing adhesive. Another issue is failing to dry lay large tiles which hides how edge chipping and slight size variation will affect the run; prevent this by dry laying and selecting tiles to minimize pattern disruption. A third problem is not rechecking alignment as you proceed, allowing small errors to compound; stop periodically, use a long straightedge across multiple tiles and reset tiles in the adhesive while it is still workable.
