Cold Tar Layered Pothole Repair Stamper Technique

Repair a pothole in your driveway using cold tar mix by preparing a clean, dry hole, layering and compacting the mix, and finishing so the surface matches the surrounding pavement.

Start by removing all loose, broken asphalt and undermined edges with a cold chisel or sturdy screwdriver and a stiff wire brush so the patch will bond to sound material. Sweep the hole and surrounding area thoroughly and blow out dust with a leaf blower or compressed air so the cold tar will adhere. For holes deeper than two inches, place angular stone chips and compact them firmly to within about one inch of the surface so you use less cold mix and reduce settlement. Pour the cold tar mix directly from the bag into the hole in layers no thicker than one inch, tamping each layer with a steel or wood stamper; keep the stamper head wet by dipping in water or rubbing with a damp rag to prevent the mix from sticking. Overfill slightly and then compact until the patched surface is level with the driveway, feathering the edges so water sheds away. Because cold mix cures by compaction and adhesion rather than chemical curing you can drive on it almost immediately after thorough tamping but avoid parking heavy loads on the new patch for at least twenty four hours to let settlement finish.

Common mistakes homeowners make include ignoring undermined edges which causes the patch to fail; fix this by cutting back to sound asphalt and ensuring a clean vertical edge before filling. A second issue is overcompacting in one spot which can push the mix out and create gaps; tamp evenly across the surface in short strokes and tamp each layer until it resists further compression. Third, trying to fill deep holes in a single pour leads to settlement and cracking; always use stone chip fill for deep voids and compact in layers before finishing with cold tar mix to create a stable base.
