Concrete Job Cost Sheet Profit Hack

Revenue is the total money a concrete company takes in from jobs before any costs are paid.

Revenue is what clients pay for concrete pours, repairs, patios, and related services, while profit is what remains after every expense is subtracted from that revenue. Track all revenue streams separately such as residential pours, commercial contracts, and maintenance work so you can see which lines drive the most income. For expenses include direct job costs like materials, labor hours, equipment rental, and disposables plus indirect costs like insurance, vehicle maintenance, permits, marketing, and administrative time; forgetting indirects will make profit look larger than it really is. Use a simple job cost sheet for each project that records material quantities, labor hours with rates, equipment hours with rental or depreciation rates, and any subcontractor fees so you can calculate gross profit per job. To improve profit focus first on raising gross margin by optimizing mix design to reduce cement without sacrificing strength, ordering materials in bulk to lower unit cost, and scheduling crews to cut idle time. Then reduce overhead by batching administrative tasks, negotiating fuel and parts discounts, and timing equipment purchases to avoid high finance charges. Finally price every bid to include a target profit margin and walk away from jobs that cannot meet that threshold without excessive risk.

Common mistakes are underestimating total job costs and leaving out indirect overhead which makes a job look profitable when it is not, so always allocate a proportional share of monthly overhead to each job when pricing. Overworking to chase revenue without monitoring margin wastes time and equipment, so set minimum acceptable profit margins and stop taking work that falls below them. And ignoring small inefficiencies like excess material waste or untracked crew hours slowly erodes profits, so audit one process a month, implement a corrective step, and measure the change on the next three jobs.
