Crack Ecosystem Sealing Guide For Sidewalk-Driveway Joints

Weeds keep coming back in untreated cracks between the sidewalk and driveway because those cracks act as small, self-maintaining ecosystems that supply seeds, soil, and moisture.

Cracks collect windblown soil, organic debris, and seeds which create a ready seedbed that only needs light and moisture to sprout. Roots can grow into tiny voids and anchor plants while extracting nutrients from trapped debris and from decomposition of organic matter, so simply pulling the top growth rarely removes the root system. Moisture concentrates in cracks because the concrete shades and cools the area, and water running off hard surfaces funnels into those gaps, giving plants a stable water source through dry periods. Temperature swings create microshifts that break concrete edges and enlarge gaps over time, making room for more soil and deeper roots. For a long term fix, clear the crack fully, remove loose material with a stiff wire brush or a pressure washer set to a low angle, allow it to dry completely, then install a flexible, breathable crack filler or a polymer-modified cement that bonds to the sides and prevents new soil accumulation. For very wide or deep gaps, backfill with coarse sand or gravel to reduce organic buildup before sealing, and consider adding a narrow bead of landscape adhesive at the surface to stop seed-laden debris from lodging.

Common problems include leaving organic debris in the crack so seeds have material to grow in, which you fix by brushing and vacuuming or blowing the crack clean before sealing. Another issue is sealing when the crack is wet or raining, which causes poor adhesion and early failure; always allow full drying for at least twenty-four hours and check weather forecast for a dry window. A third concern is using a rigid filler on a joint that moves, which cracks out and lets plants reestablish; choose a flexible, polymer-based filler matched to the expected movement and follow manufacturer cure times.
