Double-Stack Wax Ring Risks Flange Extender Fix

Should you ever double-stack wax rings when installing a toilet if the flange sits low.

Double-stacking wax rings is generally risky because wax compresses and can shift, causing leaks and sewer gas entry, so we only recommend it when the wax ring manufacturer explicitly states the product is safe for stacking. The preferred approach is to evaluate flange height relative to finished floor and choose the correct sealing method: if the flange is more than three eighths of an inch below the finished floor, use a flange extender or a reinforced wax ring with a plastic or metal horn to bridge the gap. For a flange between zero and three eighths of an inch low, a thicker wax ring that is single piece usually seals reliably without stacking. When you must raise the flange, cut the water supply and remove the toilet, clean old wax completely, dry the area, and install a proper ring or extender following torque specifications for the closet bolts so you do not crack the porcelain. Avoid relying on compressed foam or improvised materials because they can compress unevenly and fail under load. For installations in high traffic or public restrooms consider a bolted or waxless mechanical seal that provides a predictable reliable compression set for long term use.

Common mistakes include assuming more wax equals better seal which leads to uneven compression and leaks, so only double-stack if the manufacturer allows stacking and document the product guidance. Another error is not fully removing old wax before reseating the bowl which prevents the new ring from seating flat; scrape to solid surface then clean with mineral spirits and let dry before installing the replacement ring. A third issue is over tightening the closet bolts which can crack the toilet base or deform the flange; tighten evenly in small increments until the bowl is snug and level and test for rocking then use silicone around the base only as a cosmetic bead not as a seal.
