How effective is caulking for securing drywall anchors?

Caulking can provide temporary fill and reduce wobble, but it is not a structural adhesive for holding loads in drywall. Use a high quality acrylic latex caulk only to stabilize an anchor before you replace it with a proper solution; push the anchor into the hole, add a small amount of caulk around the shank to keep it from spinning, and let it cure fully for at least twenty four hours before testing any load. For medium duty needs, swap to a purpose made drywall repair product such as a resin based anchor fill or a two part epoxy designed for gypsum board, apply according to the manufacturer directions, press the anchor into place, and allow full cure time; these products bond into the gypsum and provide real holding power. For heavier loads, remove the failed anchor, enlarge the hole to the next size, insert a toggle style anchor or a threaded metal insert that expands behind the board, and tighten carefully so the load is carried by the anchor hardware rather than the filler material. If you must use caulk for an immediate quick fix, pair it with a backing support such as a piece of plywood or a furring strip behind the drywall secured to studs to transfer load away from the board. Always test the repair incrementally and avoid hanging anything heavy until you have verified the repair holds securely. Replace compromised anchors with the correct hardware as soon as practical to prevent progressive damage to the drywall and the attached object.

Common mistakes include assuming caulk is a structural adhesive which leads to repeated failures; the fix is to use products formulated for structural repair or upgraded anchor types when weight matters. People often rely on too little cure time after applying caulk or repair compound which causes immediate slippage; wait the full recommended cure period and avoid loading the anchor during that time. Another frequent issue is using the wrong anchor style for the load or wall thickness which causes pullout or wall blowout; choose a toggle, molly, or threaded insert matched to the board thickness and the expected weight and, when in doubt, distribute the load across multiple anchors.
