Use a flange extender when the toilet flange sits significantly below the finished floor and a jumbo wax ring only for small height differences.
When the finished floor raises the bowl to seal height assess the flange position precisely with a straight edge. If the flange is more than one quarter inch below the finished floor pick a flange extender that matches the flange diameter and material and stack one or two layers as needed until the top of the extender meets the finished floor level. Clean and dry the flange and extender mating surfaces then use a wax-free or wax-compatible sealant if the extender manufacturer recommends it to ensure a reliable seal. For minor gaps of one quarter inch or less a jumbo wax ring with a built-in polyethylene horn can compress to form a watertight seal without raising the flange. Tighten the toilet bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern to compress the ring while avoiding overtightening which can crack the toilet base. If the closet bolts no longer reach through the extender use extension bolts or longer bolts with matching nuts and washers and make sure the toilet sits level on the floor with shims under the base as needed before final torque.
Common mistakes include assuming a jumbo wax ring will fix a large gap which leads to leaks; if you see more than one quarter inch of uncovered flange use an extender or stack extenders and avoid relying on wax alone. Another issue is overtightening bolts to stop wobble that cracks porcelain; tighten slowly and use shims to level then only snug bolts to manufacturer recommended feel. A third problem is not replacing corroded or short closet bolts after installing an extender which prevents a secure mount; use stainless or coated longer bolts and lock nuts or washers sized to the extender so the toilet cannot shift.
