Flange Height Wax Ring Match Guide

Choose the correct wax ring by matching flange height and pipe configuration before you even touch the toilet.

Measure the distance from finished floor to the top of the flange and note whether the flange sits flush with the floor, above the floor, or below the floor; a standard wax ring works for a flange flush with the floor, an extra thick wax ring is better for flanges sitting above the floor, and a wax ring with a molded plastic horn or diverter is ideal when you need to guide waste into the soil pipe or when the flange is recessed. Check the pipe type and diameter as well because some seals are designed for a three inch outlet and others for a four inch outlet, so never assume fit without measuring. When replacing a toilet, always remove the old wax, clean the flange thoroughly, and inspect for cracks or corrosion; if the flange is damaged, repair or use a flange repair ring before sealing. For installations where the flange sits below the finished floor, consider a wax ring on a flange extender or use a wax-free compression seal designed for variable heights to avoid crushing the wax. Warm the wax ring slightly by storing it at room temperature rather than in cold conditions so it conforms more easily during seating. Tighten the toilet bolts evenly and rock the bowl gently to compress the wax evenly and then allow any trapped air to escape before final tightening and testing for leaks.

The most common mistakes are using the wrong thickness which leads to leaks or wobble, failing to clean and inspect the flange which allows contaminants to prevent a proper seal, and over tightening the toilet bolts which can crack the porcelain or squeeze out the wax. If you use the wrong thickness switch to a ring that matches the measured flange height or add an approved extender so the seal sits correctly. If the flange is dirty or corroded clean it down to bare metal or replace the flange ring and then seat the new wax on a clean, dry surface. If over tightening occurs loosen the bolts, re-seat the toilet on a fresh wax ring and tighten incrementally and evenly until the bowl is stable without stressing the porcelain.
