A small high-density foam roller lets you paint baseboards above carpet faster and with fewer visible brush marks.

Rollers deliver a smooth, spray-like texture because they lay down a thin, even film of paint that minimizes lap marks and brush strokes; use a two-inch to three-inch foam roller with a short nap for best control. Hold the roller at a slight angle and roll in long, continuous strokes from one end of the baseboard to the other to maintain a wet edge and avoid ridges. Load the roller lightly and remove excess paint by rolling on a disposable tray or scrap cardboard so you avoid drips that could reach the carpet. Where the baseboard meets trim or corners, keep a small artist brush or sash brush handy for precise cutting in and to handle areas the roller cannot reach. Use low pile painter tape sparingly along the carpet edge only if you cannot protect the carpet otherwise; press the tape down firmly and remove it while the paint is still tacky to prevent lifting. If you need a perfectly crisp line, run a clean damp cloth along the tape line immediately after removing the tape to smooth any tiny ridges.

The three most common mistakes are overloading the roller which causes drips and paint pooling on the carpet, rolling too quickly which creates uneven coverage and skipped spots, and trying to use the roller to reach into tight corners which leaves edges ragged. To prevent drips, always roll the excess off and work with smaller sections so the paint does not accumulate. Slow your rolling motion and overlap each pass by about fifty percent to ensure consistent coverage. For corners and tight joints, switch to a small brush for the first pass along the edge and then blend the roller stroke into that brush line for a seamless finish.
