Jumbo Wax Ring Stacking for Raised Flanges

Should you use a jumbo wax ring when stacking new flooring to raise a toilet flange height?

When you raise bathroom floor height, the toilet flange sits lower relative to the toilet horn and a standard wax ring often cannot form a reliable seal. Use a jumbo wax ring when the flange sits noticeably below the toilet base to maintain a continuous wax seal; choose a ring with a thicker wax collar and a wider diameter to accommodate both the waste outlet and the increased gap. If the flange is only slightly low, stacking two standard wax rings can be an effective field fix, pressing them together to create additional height while centering the inner collars so they do not offset. For larger offsets, combine a jumbo wax ring with a flange extender kit that bolts to the existing flange and provides a stable platform for the new ring; clean and level the flange face, apply plumber primer to any rubber or composite adapters if recommended, and hand tighten bolts evenly to avoid stress on the porcelain. When using wax rings, seat the toilet straight down with steady pressure and twist slightly to compress the wax and expel trapped air, then bolt it loosely first and tighten alternately to avoid cracking the bowl. Always test by running a small amount of water and checking for leaks once bolts are fully torqued and caulking is applied around the base.

Common mistakes include choosing a ring that is too thin for the raised floor which leads to leaks, so measure the gap from flange to toilet base before buying and select a jumbo ring or stack rings to match that measurement. Another issue is improper flange leveling or old flange damage that prevents a seal even with a thicker ring, so inspect the flange edge, remove rust or debris, and use a flange extender or replace the flange if it is warped. A third error is overreliance on wax alone when the flange is extremely low; in that case use a flange extender kit or a combination of extender plus jumbo ring to create a stable mechanical connection and then seal with wax for the final water tightness.
