Sulfur dust and bagged lime-sulfur are effective tools for controlling garden mites and certain fungal diseases when used with care.

Use lime-sulfur as a dormant or early season spray following label rates exactly, because it is acidic and concentrated; dilute it in the specified volume of water, apply to all woody surfaces and bark crevices, and avoid any foliage contact once buds swell to prevent phytotoxicity. For sulfur dusts, apply when plants are dry and air temperature is below ninety degrees Fahrenheit, lightly dusting undersides of leaves and webbed areas where mites hide, and reapply only after rain has washed material away. Always wear personal protective equipment including long sleeves, chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and a respirator rated for particulates or vapors as indicated on the product label to avoid inhalation and skin irritation. Do not mix sulfur products with horticultural oils, emulsifiable concentrates, or copper fungicides because chemical reactions can cause severe plant burns; if tank mixing is necessary, conduct a small patch test and consult product technical data. Time applications for early morning or late afternoon to reduce volatilization and phototoxic risk, and rotate to non-sulfur measures such as insecticidal soaps or biological controls to reduce mite resistance and preserve beneficial insects. Store bagged sulfur and concentrated lime-sulfur in a cool, dry, well ventilated area away from heat sources and incompatible chemicals, and dispose of rinse water and containers per local regulations.

The most common mistake is applying sulfur in hot weather, which causes rapid volatilization and leaf burn; avoid applying when temperatures exceed ninety degrees Fahrenheit and wait for cooler conditions. A second frequent error is using sulfur on sensitive species such as cucurbits, grapes, or young tender growth without checking tolerance; always perform a small test on a few leaves and follow label plant lists to prevent crop loss. Third, people often mix sulfur with oils or copper without realizing the risk of phytotoxic chemical reactions; do not combine these materials unless a manufacturer specifically approves the tank mix and you have tested it on a small area first.
