Check for deflection by walking the floor and measuring bounce; if noticeable deflection remains after adding plywood, install blocking between joists or add another layer of plywood with proper screw pattern and consider rigid backer boards over plywood when preparing for tile to achieve the stiffness required to avoid grout and tile failure.

Common mistakes include fastening only with nails or using too few fasteners which lets layers separate and keeps the floor springy, so always use screws with construction adhesive at the recommended spacing. Another issue is failing to address joist rot or inadequate joist spacing which causes ongoing sag and tile cracking, so inspect joists and sister or replace damaged members and add blocking to reduce span. A third problem is installing thin underlayment that meets vinyl needs but not tile stiffness requirements, so match the subfloor build up to the finish material and follow tile manufacturer stiffness guidelines, adding an additional layer or cement backer board when required.
