Use fire rated sealants around rated assemblies and penetrations to maintain required fire separation and to prevent pest access through service entries; choose products with appropriate listings for the assembly. Schedule a maintenance check every two to five years depending on exposure and climate, inspect for cracking, loss of adhesion or pinholes, and reapply or replace degraded joints promptly to maintain continuous exclusion. For interior locations such as plumbing and electrical penetrations use a sealant compatible with the material and with any required fire rating, and consider combinations of foam plus sealant where irregular voids exist.
