“Load” refers to the power source delivered to the thermostat and “signal” refers to the control wires that tell the system what to do.
The R wire is the source power or load that provides twenty-four volt alternating current to the thermostat and the system. Signal wires such as G for fan, Y for cooling, and W for heating carry control voltage back to the air handler or furnace to activate a specific function when the thermostat closes the circuit. The thermostat works by internally connecting the R source to one of those signal circuits when a call is made, so wiring continuity and correct terminal mapping are essential for reliable operation. Use a multimeter set to measure alternating current to verify twenty-four volt presence on the R terminal before changing anything and turn off power at the breaker when making physical connections. Label each wire during removal from an old thermostat or take a photo so the R and each signal wire are reattached to the correct terminals on the new device. If a heat pump or two stage system is present, read the equipment schematic and follow manufacturer wiring color conventions because additional signal wires may be used and the thermostat must support those control sequences.
The three most common mistakes are misidentifying R as a signal wire which can result in no power to the thermostat, swapping signal wires which causes incorrect functions to run, and failing to verify transformer voltage leading to control board damage. If R is misidentified, trace the wire back to the transformer or air handler and confirm it is the continuous twenty-four volt supply before wiring the thermostat. For swapped signal wires, reconnect using the photo or labels you made and test each call individually by setting fan on, cooling on, and heating on to confirm correct responses. To avoid transformer or control board damage always turn off system power at the breaker, confirm expected voltage with a meter, and only proceed if the reading matches the equipment specification.
