Adding thick tile to a bathroom can break the toilet seal if you do not raise the flange and adjust the wax ring properly.
When you install thick tile you first measure the finished floor height above the existing subfloor and compare that to the height of the toilet flange above the finished floor. If the flange sits below the finished floor by more than one quarter of an inch you should raise it. A straightforward approach is to either use a flange extender that stacks on the existing flange or to reinstall the flange at the new height after trimming the closet flange pipe if needed. Use an extra thick wax ring designed for raised toilet installations, or choose a wax ring with a plastic horn for better alignment and compression control. Make sure the wax ring fully contacts both the toilet horn and the flange; a dry fit helps you see alignment before compressing the ring. When setting the toilet, press down evenly and rock the bowl slightly to seat it, then secure the bolts and tighten them alternately to avoid cracking the porcelain. After tightening, apply a bead of quality bathroom silicone caulk around the base and smooth it above the floor level to block moisture from seeping under the toilet.
Common mistakes include leaving the flange too low which allows sewer gases and leaks, so either stack a flange extender or reposition the flange flush with the finished tile, ensuring the wax ring compresses properly. Another error is using a standard thin wax ring that will overcompress and fail, so select an extra thick ring or a ring specifically rated for elevated floors and confirm the ring height matches the flange gap. A third problem is under-tightening or over-tightening the closet bolts; tighten bolts in small increments in an alternating pattern until snug and then stop to prevent cracking, and always finish by caulking above the floor to protect the seal rather than below where water can collect.
