Replace Wax Ring Only Keep Flange Intact Guide

You can often replace only the wax ring without moving the flange when the flange is intact and at or above floor level.

Start by turning off the water and draining the toilet completely by flushing and using a sponge to remove remaining water from the bowl and tank. Loosen and remove the closet bolts then lift the toilet straight up and set it on an old towel or cardboard to protect the floor. Scrape all old wax from the toilet horn and the flange surface using a rigid putty knife until both are clean and dry, and wear gloves to avoid contamination. Inspect the flange: it must be flush with or slightly above the finished floor and undamaged; if it is cracked or sunk below the floor level you should not rely on a simple wax ring replacement. Choose a thick wax ring or a wax ring with a polyethylene or foam flange extender if the flange sits slightly below the toilet horn, but only use extenders when the flange itself is stable. When seating the new ring, press the wax to the toilet horn and carefully lower the bowl straight down onto the flange, rocking slightly to compress the wax evenly, then tighten bolts alternately and moderately to avoid cracking the porcelain.

Common mistakes include assuming any flange position will work; if the flange is below the floor the wax will deform and leak, so raise the flange or use a proper nonwax seal when necessary. Another frequent issue is insufficient cleaning of old wax which prevents the new ring from sealing; always scrape until metal or ceramic is visible and dry before installing a new ring. Overtightening bolts is also common and can crack the toilet base; tighten bolts evenly and stop when snug, then check for wobble and use shims instead of overtightening to level the bowl.
