Wear the right protective gear before starting any repair to prevent dust inhalation and chemical exposure.
Always use sturdy nitrile or latex gloves to keep chemicals and solvents off your skin and to reduce cuts and abrasions. Choose a respirator or at minimum a certified dust mask rated for fine particulates when sanding, scraping, or mixing powders; if you are using solvents or working in a confined space a respirator with appropriate organic vapor cartridges is required. Wear impact rated safety goggles that seal around the eyes to stop dust and splashes from reaching the eye and keep a face shield available for grinding or heavy splash risk. Put on a long sleeve old shirt or a simple canvas apron to protect your arms and clothing; avoid loose cuffs that can catch on tools. Use closed toe shoes with a firm sole to protect feet from dropped tools or sharp debris and consider knee pads for extended kneeling tasks. Always work with ventilation, whether a fan pulling air out of the work area or opening windows, and wash exposed skin and change clothing immediately after finishing to remove residues.
Common mistakes include using a basic paper dust mask for solvent fumes which does not block vapors; fix this by switching to a respirator rated for organic vapors when using paints, adhesives, or strong cleaners. Another issue is relying on regular eyeglasses instead of sealed safety goggles which let dust or splashes reach the eye; remedy that by choosing goggles that fit close to the face and pairing them with a face shield for higher risk tasks. A third problem is wearing loose or synthetic clothing that can snag or melt when exposed to heat or solvents; wear fitted cotton or canvas clothing and remove jewelry or loose accessories before working.
