The main reason half-used caulk tubes go bad before the next project is exposure to air causing the remaining sealant to cure inside the nozzle and body.
Airborne curing occurs because most silicone and latex caulks cure by reacting with moisture or by solvent evaporation, so when oxygen or dry air reaches the material it begins to harden; to prevent this push the remaining caulk back into the tube as far as possible with the plunger or a rod, wipe the nozzle clean with a cloth and solvent appropriate to the product, then cap the tube tightly and wrap the tip in cling film or aluminum foil to block air. For silicone, consider inserting a long nail or a length of coated wire through the nozzle so that the curing front cannot progress into the tube body, and for latex squeeze out a small bead to remove trapped air before sealing so pressure differences do not draw air back in. Store cartridges upright with the nozzle pointing upward to keep the remaining material away from the opening and reduce surface area exposed to air. Keep tubes in a cool, dry place because heat speeds chemical reactions and solvent loss so refrigeration at mildly cool temperatures will slow curing without freezing; if you refrigerate, label tubes and let them warm to room temperature before use to ensure proper flow. Use airtight commercial caps or specially designed storage plugs when available because they provide a better seal than improvised caps and often include an internal plunger to displace air. Finally, when planning work, transfer remaining caulk into a smaller airtight container if only a small amount is left, or consider using a squeeze tube instead of a cartridge for small tasks since smaller volumes reduce air exposure risk.
The three most common mistakes are leaving the original nozzle uncleaned which lets cured material form a plug; fix that by cutting the nozzle short, removing cured bits, and cleaning with solvent before resealing. Another error is relying on a loose cap or tape that does not form a true airtight seal; use a snug commercial cap or wrap the nozzle with cling film and then aluminum foil to create a reliable barrier. The third issue is storing tubes in warm or humid spots which accelerates curing; move storage to a consistently cool, dry location and refrigerate when possible, and always allow the caulk to return to working temperature before application.
