Inspect each hinge pin and barrel for bending, corrosion, or stripped knuckles and replace pins if they show wear; a slightly bent pin will cause binding even if the hinge looks intact. Clean plates, screws, and latch mechanisms with a mild degreaser and a brass brush to remove grime, then lubricate moving parts with a light penetrating oil or graphite powder for smooth operation. When reinstalling hinges, start by screwing the top hinge loosely, hang the door, and then check gap and reveal before tightening fully so the door hangs plumb and swings without rubbing. The most common issue is misaligned latch and strike where the bolt does not fully enter the strike pocket; fix this by marking the contact point on the strike, enlarging the mortise slightly, and repositioning the strike plate so the bolt seats cleanly. Another frequent problem is hinge wear causing sag or binding; address this by replacing bent pins or using longer screws in the hinge mortise to draw the hinge tight into the jamb framing for better support. A third concern is damage to fasteners or stripped screw holes in soft jamb material; repair by filling holes with hardwood toothpicks and glue or using slightly larger diameter screws, then reattach hardware once the filler cures for a secure hold.
