Store leftover sealant in a way that preserves its chemistry so it remains usable for touch ups.
Most sealants are polymer based and sensitive to moisture and heat, so cap the tube tightly immediately after use and wipe the nozzle to remove excess material. Store the tube upright with the nozzle pointing up to reduce the chance of curing at the tip and to keep air out of the remaining product. Keep sealants in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes because heat can accelerate chemical reactions that thicken or cure the product prematurely. If your filler came in a cartridge, replace the cap or use a purpose made clip to prevent air ingress and consider transferring the cartridge to a resealable plastic bag with as much air removed as possible for an extra layer of protection. Label the container with the date you opened it and the product name so you can track age and compatibility when you need it later. Check the manufacturer instructions for the recommended usable period after opening since many products remain effective for up to twelve months while others will degrade faster.
Common problems include the nozzle clogging from partial curing, which you avoid by wiping the tip clean and storing upright and capped; if a tip is already blocked, cut back only a small portion of the nozzle until you achieve a fresh opening and then cap again after use. Another issue is thickening or skinning inside the tube, which happens when air gets in; to mitigate this remove excess air by pushing out a bit of product into a scrap area before re-capping or use a small amount of petroleum jelly on the threads to improve the seal. Compatibility mistakes occur when people mix different products for a repair and get poor adhesion or cure problems, so always match the product chemistry to the substrate and use the same type of sealant for touch ups.
We run BigHomeProjects.com where we connect homeowners with local contractors and provide resources for home maintenance topics like sealant storage. We also host a discussion community where our members share real world tips and contractor recommendations and where contractors can find work leads and engage with potential clients.
