Common mistakes include setting nails too low so their heads are exposed and create a direct water entry point, which you fix by re-nailing higher on the shingle and sealing nail heads with quality roofing caulk. Another frequent issue is underlapping or misaligning replacement shingle edges which breaks the water shedding sequence, so always match the exposure to surrounding shingles and tuck the butt into the tab area of the course below for a continuous overlap. Third is relying solely on temporary surface caulks that are not rated for roofing use, which can fail in ultraviolet light and temperature change, so use products specified for roofing applications and inspect seals after the first few storms to confirm durability.
