Tub spouts must deliver high flow to prevent water backing up into the shower head.
PEX tubing often reduces flow at the tub spout because typical PEX crimp or barb adapters narrow the effective opening and add internal lips that create turbulence. To prevent backup into the shower head use fittings with an internal diameter equal to or larger than the tub spout inlet. Prefer push to connect fittings like SharkBite that offer a straight, unobstructed path or use standard male NPT or pipe thread adapters sized to match the spout tailpiece so the opening remains large and smooth. When installing cut PEX square and deburr the end before attaching any fitting to avoid beads that catch debris and restrict flow. If you must transition from PEX to rigid pipe keep the transition as close to the spout as practical so the final run to the spout is full bore copper or brass. Test flow before finishing the wall by temporarily attaching the spout and running full hot and cold to confirm no backing into the shower head.
Common mistakes start with using crimp or clamp style PEX adapters at the spout which often have a reduced bore; swap to a full bore push to connect or threaded adapter. Another issue is leaving a PEX stub into the spout where the tubing end creates a lip; cut back the PEX and transition to a rigid tailpiece so the spout sees a smooth opening. A third problem is undersizing the adapter or using rigid inserts that step down the diameter; always match or exceed the spout port size and check internal diameters rather than relying on nominal labels.
