You can tell the clog is loosening when the water level in the bowl starts to drop and flows more freely after using the soap.
When treating a toilet clog with soap, start by pouring a generous amount of liquid dish soap around the edges so it coats the standing water; the soap reduces surface tension and can lubricate trapped waste making it easier to move. Wait at least twenty to thirty minutes to allow the soap to penetrate the blockage, and avoid flushing immediately because a premature flush may cause an overflow if the clog has not moved. If the water level lowers noticeably during the wait that is a strong indication the clog is breaking up and air and water can pass through the obstruction. After the waiting period, perform a gentle test flush and watch for smooth drainage and no sudden rise of water back into the bowl; a clean, sustained siphon means the path is clear. If the flush is partial and the level still stays high, repeat the soap treatment and consider adding hot but not boiling water to help dissolve fats; pour it from waist height to add modest pressure without risking cracks. Use a plunger only after the soap has had time to work and always check that the plunger forms a tight seal; pump gently at first to avoid splashing and only increase force if you see incremental drainage improvement.
Three common mistakes are flushing repeatedly right after adding soap which can cause an overflow because the clog has not yet moved, so wait and observe the water level before testing the flush. Another is using boiling water which can damage porcelain or wax seals, so use hot tap water instead and pour carefully to avoid thermal shock. A third is assuming the soap always fixes the problem; if you see no change after two treatments or the water keeps rising during attempts, stop and call a plumber to avoid making the blockage worse or creating spillage.
