Use a flexible, paintable, stretch-type acrylic latex caulk for sealing baseboard gaps.
For baseboards you want a caulk that adheres to both wood and painted surfaces while remaining flexible enough to handle seasonal movement in the wall and trim. Choose a premium acrylic latex formulated for stretch to maintain a continuous seal without cracking when the house expands or contracts. Look for a product labeled paintable and sandable so you can finish and repaint without the caulk splitting or leaving texture differences. Apply with a small to medium sized bead and tool it smooth with a damp finger or a caulk finishing tool so the joint is fully filled but not overbulked. Allow at least two hours of skin time before applying paint, and longer in cooler or high humidity conditions, to avoid pulling or wrinkling the paint film. For gaps wider than one quarter inch consider backer rod plus a two-pass caulk method or use a flexible siliconized acrylic if increased movement is expected.
Common mistakes include using 100 percent silicone in place of paintable acrylic which bonds well but will not accept most paints so your finish will not match; avoid that when you need to repaint. Another error is laying down an oversized bead which leaves a bulging seam that never sands smooth; instead apply a modest bead and tool it into the joint immediately for a neat profile. A third frequent issue is painting before the caulk has fully cured which can lead to wrinkling or adhesion loss; wait the recommended cure window and check manufacturer guidance for cooler or humid conditions to be safe.
