Pesticide use in home gardens can kill bees and other beneficial insects far beyond the ants you are trying to control.

Pyrethroid granules are especially risky when they spread from lawns into mulched beds where pollinators and soil composters forage and nest, so restrict those granules to turf areas only and sweep any stray particles back onto the grass before watering. Use pyrethrin sprays instead of synthetic pyrethroids when you need a contact treatment, and apply them after sunset when bees are not active to reduce lethal exposure; remember that pyrethrin breaks down faster in sunlight but still harms insects on contact. Maintain organic mulch that is at least two inches thick to support ground-nesting bees and composting organisms while reducing bare soil that attracts ants, and replace or fluff the mulch periodically to prevent compaction that can trap beneficials. Before any application, do a systematic manual check of the target area by lifting small sections of mulch and inspecting under rocks and logs for nests or active pollinators, then delay treatment if you find bees or a lot of decomposers. When treating ant trails, target the nest directly rather than broadcasting pesticide over flowering plants or rich organic matter, and consider bait stations placed on impervious surfaces so foraging ants pick up baits without exposing other insects. If chemical control is unavoidable, choose the least persistent product and spot treat, then monitor the area daily for signs of non target harm and stop treatment immediately if you see distressed bees or reduced soil activity.

Gardeners commonly overapply products across beds which contaminates pollen and nectar, so switch to targeted baiting and treat nests directly. People often spray during the day when bees are active, so move all contact sprays to after sunset and avoid treating blooming plants altogether. Another frequent issue is treating mulched beds with lawn products, so keep lawn granular pyrethroids confined to grass, sweep spillover back into turf, and avoid using the same granules around garden beds.
