Know how to attach, read, and interpret pressure gauges to diagnose refrigeration and air conditioning charge and performance quickly and accurately.
Start by confirming you have the correct gauge set for the refrigerant in use and a reliable thermometer for suction and liquid line readings. Connect the low side hose to the suction service port and the high side hose to the liquid line service port while the system is running and stable; allow the pressures to settle for a minute after connecting. Record the running pressures and the ambient outdoor temperature and then convert those pressures to saturation temperatures using the refrigerant pressure temperature chart for the specific refrigerant. Measure the evaporator or suction line temperature near the service port for superheat calculation by subtracting the saturation temperature from the measured suction line temperature, and measure the liquid line temperature near the high side port for subcooling by subtracting the measured liquid line temperature from the saturation temperature. Use superheat and subcooling target ranges based on system type: for fixed orifice systems expect higher superheat numbers than for systems with a thermostatic expansion valve; for systems with a thermal expansion valve common low superheat targets are between eight and twelve degrees fahrenheit but always refer to manufacturer guidance. If readings do not match expected values combine them with other observations like compressor amp draw, airflow measurements, and visual clues such as frosting or flooding to determine whether the issue is undercharge, overcharge, restriction, or airflow related.
The three most common mistakes are attaching gauges with the system off and assuming static pressures tell you charge, misreading pressure temperature charts for the wrong refrigerant, and ignoring temperature differentials that affect superheat and subcooling. If you attach gauges with the system off you only see equalized static pressure; always take running pressures with the unit at steady state. If you use the wrong chart or read the wrong refrigerant column you will get incorrect saturation temperatures and wrong diagnostics; always verify the refrigerant type from the service label and cross check the chart before calculating. If you ignore line temperatures or ambient conditions you will miscalculate superheat or subcool; always measure line temperatures at the correct locations, note outside and return air temperatures, and adjust your expectations using manufacturer or system type guidelines.
