Verify refrigerant charge and system performance after repairs by measuring pressures and temperature differentials to confirm proper operation.
Start by hooking up manifold gauges and recording static, running low side, and running high side pressures while the system is at steady state. Measure suction and liquid line temperatures at the compressor and at the evaporator exit using contact probes to compute superheat and subcooling. Calculate superheat by subtracting the evaporator saturation temperature corresponding to the measured low side pressure from the measured suction line temperature at the evaporator exit. Calculate subcooling by subtracting the measured liquid line temperature at the condenser exit from the condenser saturation temperature corresponding to the measured high side pressure. Compare those values to the equipment manufacturer targets and to standard guidelines for the application, then make small refrigerant additions or recoveries in controlled increments while allowing the system to stabilize between changes. Always monitor compressor amperage and outdoor conditions because ambient temperature and load affect expected targets and can mask undercharge or overcharge.
The common mistakes I see are relying on pressure readings alone without temperature corrections which leads to incorrect charge adjustments, and the fix is to always pair pressures with accurate temperature measurements at the appropriate points. Another frequent issue is adjusting charge with the system in a transient state, which causes overcorrection, so allow the system to run steady for at least five to ten minutes after each adjustment before recording values. Technicians also sometimes fail to verify airflow and coil condition which produces misleading superheat and subcooling numbers, so always confirm blower operation, filter cleanliness, and that coils are free of frost or debris before finalizing the charge.
We built BigHomeProjects.com to connect homeowners with local contractors and to help contractors find new work through project postings and lead opportunities. We also host a discussion community where tradespeople and homeowners exchange practical advice, troubleshooting tips, and recommendations related to commissioning procedures and refrigerant best practices.
