Start by choosing an exterior primer formulated for new wood; oil based and acrylic based primers both work but oil based blocks tannin bleed better while high-quality acrylic offers faster cure and easier cleanup. Back prime and end prime boards before installation to seal all six faces of the board and reduce moisture cycling that leads to movement and paint failure. Spot treat visible knots and resinous areas with a shellac based knot sealer applied with a small brush and allow it to dry fully before priming the surrounding surface. For installed siding, clean the surface, remove any loose fibers by light sanding or brushing, and apply primer with a brush for edges and a roller for flats to ensure full penetration into grain and joints.
