Choose spacer size intentionally and place them consistently so grout joints stay even and easy to clean.

For a kitchen floor start by deciding the joint width based on tile size and material; for large format porcelain choose wider joints like three to five millimeters for movement and for small ceramic tiles one to two millimeters can look crisp. Use rigid plastic or reusable T spacers for square layouts and wedge or levelling spacers for uneven tiles to maintain a flat plane; levelling systems clamp adjoining tiles and prevent lippage while spacers only control gap width. Dry lay a row or two with spacers to verify pattern and spacing and measure diagonals to keep the grid square; adjust your starting chalk line or layout lines before any thinset goes down. Mix thinset to a firm, non slump consistency and butter both the floor and tile backs for full coverage; press tiles into place, seating them so the spacer sits fully at the corner or edge and does not float up. Check alignment frequently with a straight edge and a four foot level to catch drift early and reset any tiles within the open working time of the mortar. Remove large levelling clips after the mortar sets to the manufacturer recommended time and pull out simple plastic spacers once the mortar is thumbprint firm but before final curing so they do not trap moisture or interfere with grout.

Homeowners often use the wrong spacer size which makes grout look too thin or too wide so always match spacer size to tile dimensions and the look you want, and test a small area first. Another frequent issue is leaving spacers in during grouting which can prevent grout from fully filling the joint so remove them when mortar is set enough to hold tile but not fully cured. A third problem is tile lippage where adjacent tiles are not flush; prevent this by using a tile levelling system, accurately troweling mortar for even bed thickness, and checking with a straight edge as you go.
