When possible, plan tile layout so cuts and grout lines fall at the threshold rather than full tile edges, and dry lay tiles before setting so you can adjust the layout to minimize visible step differences.
Common mistakes include assuming the subfloor is flat and not checking multiple points which leads to surprises at the door threshold; fix this by taking precise measurements across the full width and correcting the subfloor before tile setting. Another issue is using incompatible adhesive or transition material that fails over time; address that by matching product specifications to the substrate and traffic load and following manufacturer coverage and cure instructions. A third concern is creating a sharp abrupt edge that becomes a trip point; avoid that by employing tapered reducers, plywood shims, or poured tapered underlayment so the transition is gradual and complies with local accessibility expectations.
