Dirty coils need the right cleaner and a careful technique to restore efficiency and prevent damage.
Start by identifying the coil type and surface material because that determines the cleaner and pressure you can use. Use a labeled coil cleaner formulated for your system, for example Tri Power New Calgon, and always follow the product directions for dilution and dwell time. Apply the cleaner to both the inside and the outside of the coil surface so trapped soil and biological growth can be dissolved from all sides. Let the cleaner soak long enough to break down oils and biofilm but not so long that it dries on the fins, typically the time range on the product label is safe to follow. Rinse thoroughly with low pressure from the opposite side of airflow to push loosened debris out, and avoid pressure washing at high psi against fins because that will bend them and reduce air flow. Finish by combing any bent fins straight with a fin comb sized to the coil fin spacing and remove large solid debris first by hand or with a shop vacuum before wet cleaning.
Common mistakes include using a generic degreaser that is too alkaline which can corrode coil coatings and solder joints, so choose a pH appropriate cleaner and check the label; if corrosion is present, stop and consult a refrigerant or coil repair specialist. Another frequent error is using high pressure to rinse which bends fins and forces contaminants deeper into the coil; instead rinse from the cleanest side toward the dirt side at low pressure and allow full soaking time so mechanical pressure is unnecessary. A third concern is incomplete drying that leaves residual cleaner or moisture and encourages mold, so after rinsing, allow adequate drying time by restoring gentle airflow and if possible vacuuming remaining moisture, and recheck coil performance before closing access panels.
